Welcome to Video Production 1, one of four classes you can take in Video Production at Heritage.

What’s CCTE?

CCTE stands for College Career Technical Education = you learn skills in this class that actual videographers in the industry study and know. You’ll use equipment (Digital SLR cameras) and Software ( Adobe Premiere) that videographers use daily.

Smaller Video Projects

Smaller projects are individual projects about 1 minute in length.  In the past smaller projects have included

  • Focus
  • Multiple Camera Angles
  • Production Logo

Larger Group Video Projects

Larger group video projects are produced by a group of people and are between 3 and 5 minutes in length. In the past group projects have included.

  • Group Project: Documentary
  • Group Project: Narrative
  • Group Project: Music Video

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES:

 

IM 120: Outcome (at least one):

  • Describe how and why to organize digital files and folders for effective workflow
  • Identify the proper way to name digital files
  • Describe how and why to organize digital files and folders for effective workflow
  • Identify appropriate compression strategies for raster and vector files
  • List twenty key commands or keyboard shortcuts for the most common actions
  • Identify how to find, apply, display, alter and extract a file’s metadata
  • Discuss the relationships between resolution, color space and color modes, and file formats for both editing and output
  • Compare benefits and limitations of desktop, laptop, tablets, smartphone devices

IM123 Outcome (at least one)

  • Recall a breakdown of microphone directional response.
  • Explain the basic physical attributes of sound
  • Distinguish between signal processing devices and their three main categories: spectral-based, amplitude-based, and time-based
  • Explain the process of how two or more devices may be synchronized
  • Identify techniques for monitoring mixes in progress
  • Identify the integration of digital audio files into multimedia and web-based applications
  • Explain the differences between compressed and uncompressed audio file formats
  • Identify the interface components and tools for industry standard DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) software used to edit sound for various multimedia projects

IM124 Outcome (at least one)

  • Describe how to set up project folders and file structures to distribute media for a post-production project
  • Describe the relationship between sequences and linked media assets in a project
  • Identify features of the Premier Pro workspace and its user interface
  • Explain how metadata is used to tag media and how it is referenced in post production
  • Identify the various media file formats common in video acquisition
  • List several codecs used in the post production process
  • List the steps needed to place and organize clips on a timeline for a rough edit
  • Explain the difference in these basic types of edits: insert, overwrite, three point edit, ripple/roll, trim, blade and nesting
  • Identify an efficient workflow methodology for rough assembly through work print to final project output including multiple video and layered graphics tracks.
  • Describe the steps used to deliver and archive a finished project in a variety of formats

 

Grading

Your grade is based on the following.

  • Small, individual projects. (30% of your grade)
  • Larger, group projects (30% of your grade)
  • Small tutorials (10% of your grade)
  • Participation (critiques & group work) (30% of your grade)

I grade on a 4 point scale, meaning each of your assignments are worth 4 points total.

If you get a ‘1’ on an assignment, that is my version of a ‘0’ which means I didn’t get the assignment. I always give credit for work that you have turned in.

I grade your assignments based on a rubric developed to meet the criteria for that assignment.

FINAL Project: Blog Portfolio Project:

A professional-looking online portfolio showcasing your best work of the semester. Each project you make will be uploaded to VIMEO, with embedded content describing your role in each of these projects. You will hand in a link to the blog on the last day of school. The final Group Video Project will be due the week before.

Cell phone Use
This class follows the HHS rule of cell phones in classrooms. That unless THE ENTIRE CLASS is using them, then they will be OFF AND AWAY unless INDICATED BY THE TEACHER

Music in Class

Because of the cellphone rule, music can be streamed via approved streaming sites online to headphones that you provide. Music will be turned off during demonstrations but may be listened to during non-group work time. Editing photos, for example. Youtube for music is not allowed because of how distracting it is.

Group Critiques

Each Friday we will, as a class critique the work completed that week in this class. I want everyone to participate in these critiques. Feedback from your peers about your work is the only way you will improve as a video maker. Participation is 30% of your grade. Be a good critiquer, and a good listener.

Comments

Anytime I call for students to write comments I will use the rubric below to assess the quality of your comment. The comment grade is averaged in with your participation grade.

The Blog

You are responsible for every single thing that I post on this website. If you have questions about an assignment, make sure you look and the blog post BEFORE asking someone.  Every question about what is required for a specific assignment is on the blog. Your peers might not know the answer. I create the blog to save time and to eliminate confusion.

Behavior and Video Passes – Or, Don’t Be a Jerk Dude.

In this class, you will be allowed to shoot anywhere on campus, except for the bathrooms and the outer fields, for up to 20 minutes. Group Members must stick together at all times.  Failure to report back before the time on the pass will result in one warning, then for each infraction you lose photo pass privileges for one week. Same goes for unprofessional behavior. YOU ARE OUTSIDE TO WORK ON YOUR PROJECT, NOT TO GOOF OFF, SKIP, ETC.

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE PERSMISSION FROM THE STUDENT OR TEACHER IF YOU ARE USING A STUDENT FROM OUTSIDE CLASS. PULLING SOMEONE ON A BATHROOM PASS, DOESN’T WORK, BECAUSE IT CAUSES THEM TO MISS CLASS.

We are a professional Learning Environment, one that is supposed to emulate the world of work. Because of this we will act like the professionals we are at all times, including the hallways, profanity, sliding down stairs, running in the hallways or misbehaving in the hallways will not be tolerated.

Failure to adhere to the above professional conduct rules will result in one warning, then a loss of hall pass privileges for one week for each additional infraction.

Tardies & Attendance

Being on time to a video class is essential in everyone’s success. With the amount of group work we do in class, it is vital that everyone come to class on time. In Video Production we depend on one another to get our work done. If you are absent frequently, then you pull down everybody else on your team. We need to be dependable, responsible people, and that’s  only way we will all succeed as a class.

More than three tardies = one lunch detention. Don’t let this happen to you.

Things I shouldn’t  have to say, but you’d be surprised.

Foods and/or drink are NOT allowed in this room or in any computer lab. Water is okay, as long as it is away from computers.

Do not mess with anyone’s computer, pranks or turning off people’s computers in the middle of a work sessions, will result in detentions, referrals and loss of computer pass privileges. We are here to support each other’s as the professionals we are.

Lining up at the door is a waste of your time and sends me the message that you do not care about this class, or me. WE WORK BELL TO BELL

Video games are never allowed in here. find something else to do, view other students work, etc.

You may listen to music, on the computer, through online streaming sites or on your ipod/phone,

etc.

BRING YOUR OWN HEADPHONES.

Derogatory or inflammatory language to one another is not tolerated.

Treat the equipment and computers with utmost respect.

Have fun, and express yourself, these aren’t just assignments, this is art, and ART=LIFE
